For the first time in a film, the story of Jean Monnet is told. It is the story of a simple cognac merchant without higher education who was never a politician and yet who played an often ludicrous role in the background at all turning points of 20th century world history. Without him, today's Europe would not exist – a story so fantastic (as well as unknown) that, as Monnet himself wrote in his memoirs, "a screenwriter who made it up would not find credence with anyone". In fact, however, this documentary of the Father of Europe is a parable for the present and the future of the idea of Europe.
